Spiccor Terms of Use
Effective date: October 29, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and the people who build and run Spiccor ("Spiccor," "we," "us"). Spiccor is a student hackathon project, not a company. By using Spiccor, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use Spiccor.
1. What Spiccor is, and isn't
Spiccor reads sheet music, listens to your playing, and gives automated feedback on notes, pitch, rhythm, vibrato, dynamics and, if you use the camera, posture and hand shape. An optional AI tutor can discuss that feedback with you.
It's an experiment. Spiccor is an early prototype built in a short time. Its measurements and scores have not been validated against teachers or competition judges. They can be wrong, sometimes badly. Some features are labeled experimental because we know they are less reliable.
It isn't a teacher. Spiccor's feedback is not a substitute for a qualified violin teacher. Don't rely on it alone for auditions, exams, competitions, admissions or any other decision that matters.
It isn't medical advice. Posture and hand feedback compares your position with general reference examples. It can't judge your body, history or limits. If playing causes pain, numbness or tingling, stop and see a doctor or physical therapist. Don't push through pain because Spiccor suggested a position.
2. Who can use it
You must be at least 13 to use Spiccor. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian, and they agree to these terms for you. Don't create an account for anyone else, and keep your sign-in details to yourself. You are responsible for what happens in your account.
3. Your content
"Your content" means the sheet music, songs, recordings, video, names and messages you put into Spiccor.
You own your content. You give us a limited permission to store, copy, process and display your content only to run Spiccor for you. That includes sending limited parts of it to the providers listed in the Privacy Policy when you use their features. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account. Removed content is erased for good after a 10-minute undo window, except for backup copies that expire on the schedule in the Privacy Policy. We don't use your content to train models, and we don't share it publicly.
You need the rights to what you upload. Many published scores are copyrighted. Upload only music you own, that is in the public domain, or that you are otherwise allowed to copy for personal practice. Record only yourself, or people who have agreed to be recorded. A parent or guardian must agree for anyone under 18.
Songs. When you add an audio file, you are asking Spiccor to copy that audio and write sheet music from it for you. You make that request, and you are responsible for it. By adding it, you confirm that you own the music, that it is in the public domain, or that the rights holder has allowed you to use it this way. Sheet music Spiccor writes from someone else's song is for your own private practice. Don't publish, sell or share it.
Copyright complaints. If you think something on Spiccor infringes your copyright, email us with the material, the work you believe it infringes, your contact details, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorized. We will remove infringing material and close the accounts of people who infringe repeatedly.
4. Rules
Don't:
- Upload anything illegal, or record someone without their permission
- Use Spiccor to copy or download music you aren't allowed to, or to share sheet music it writes from music you don't have the rights to
- Try to get into other people's accounts or data, or get around access controls
- Overload or attack the service, or get around its rate limits (for example by rotating addresses or creating guest sessions in bulk)
- Scrape, crawl or harvest Spiccor with bots or scripts, or reverse-engineer it, except as the open-source licenses below allow
- Copy or replicate Spiccor: its design, layout, written content, feedback wording or the way it presents results, to make a look-alike or competing product
- Distill Spiccor: collect its outputs (sheet music it writes, feedback, scores, tutor answers or voice) in bulk or systematically to train, fine-tune, evaluate or benchmark another AI model or product
- Use the AI tutor to produce harmful content, or present its answers as a teacher's advice
We may suspend or remove accounts that break these rules or put the service or other people at risk.
5. AI features
The tutor and AI-written feedback come from outside AI models (see the Privacy Policy). AI output can be confidently wrong. Spiccor checks the numbers in AI-written comments against its own measurements, but it can't check everything. Use your judgment and your teacher's.
6. Open-source software
Spiccor's code and the components it relies on are covered by their own open-source licenses, including the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL-3.0) for the MUSC transcription component. Those licenses govern your use of the code, and nothing in these terms limits the rights they give you. Where a license requires it, we will provide the corresponding source code.
7. Availability
Spiccor is free and may change, break, lose data or shut down at any time, with or without notice. We will try to give notice before shutting down Spiccor, and we will delete stored data as described in the Privacy Policy. Keep your own copies of anything important.
8. No warranties
SPICCOR IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. THIS INCLUDES ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON'T PROMISE THAT SPICCOR WILL BE ACCURATE, SECURE, UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT YOUR CONTENT WON'T BE LOST.
9. Limit of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS:
- WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST DATA, LOST OPPORTUNITIES OR PERSONAL INJURY ARISING FROM RELYING ON SPICCOR'S FEEDBACK, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE POSSIBLE.
- OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO SPICCOR IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS OR $50.
Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn't allow us to limit, such as liability for fraud or for gross negligence or intentional misconduct.
10. Indemnity
If you break these terms or the law, upload content you didn't have the right to upload, or ask Spiccor to copy music you weren't allowed to, and someone makes a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of that claim, including reasonable legal fees, to the extent the law allows.
11. Ending
You can stop using Spiccor and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or if we shut down the service. Sections 3 (copyright responsibilities), 8, 9, 10 and 12 continue to apply after your access ends.
12. Law and disputes
California law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Before filing a claim, please email us so we can try to resolve it informally. Any lawsuit must be brought in the state or federal courts in California, unless the law where you live gives you the right to sue at home.
13. Changes
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top and, for significant changes, notify signed-in users before they take effect. If you keep using Spiccor after that, you accept the new terms.
14. Everything else
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement about Spiccor. If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a term right away, we haven't given it up. You can't transfer these terms. We may transfer them if the project moves to a new owner, such as a company formed by the team.
